From Farm to Fork: Practical Examples of Digitalisation and Local Food Traceability
How do digital solutions work in practice within a local food chain, and how do they strengthen food traceability?
Students from the Italian ITS Academy Agroalimentare Veneto explored these questions during their visit to the Zelena točka Centre in Murska Sobota on 22 October 2026. During the visit, they learned how technology and the principles of sustainable development are applied in agriculture.
Local supply chains and the development of innovative solutions
Janja Viher presented the work of the Zelena točka Centre and ITC Murska Sobota, as well as the short food supply chain, which now connects more than 70 local producers and food providers.
Marina Balaic focused on the Green Point Living Lab, where farmers, companies, researchers and consumers jointly develop and test new solutions. She also highlighted the successful cooperation with Skupina Hudo Dobro, through which surplus fruit and vegetables were used to develop new, high-quality food products and help reduce food waste.
Digital solutions tailored to farmers
Andrej Dover presented DIH AGRIFOOD, its central portal and digital applications. The presentation focused on developing tools in direct cooperation with farmers and testing them under real farming conditions.
Digital traceability in the dairy supply chain
Nika Cvetko presented the MUU CHAIN initiative within the SMART ERA project. As part of this initiative, the Food Trace application is being adapted to support reliable digital traceability in the dairy supply chain in the Italian Val di Sole valley.
Inspiration and opportunities for young people in the agrifood sector
The visit clearly demonstrated how young people can actively shape the future of agriculture by combining knowledge of technology, economics, sustainability and food systems.
The students concluded their inspiring day at Hiša gibanice in Renkovci, where they exchanged theory for practice and prepared a traditional Prekmurska gibanica entirely from scratch. This also rounded off the story of our ecosystem through the involvement of active DIH AGRIFOOD members.
